In our feature blog, ‘Interview with a recruiter’ we’ve been hearing from recruiters at Spencer Clarke Group to uncover insightful advice for successful hiring and candidate guidance across our specialisms.

This time, we’re speaking to Recruitment Consultant, Jolie Moon, who specialises in primary education recruitment. Before her career in recruitment, Jolie gained first hand experience in the classroom as an SEN Teaching Assistant and later gained Qualified Teacher Status.

With a background in teaching, Jolie now excels at matching passionate education professionals with a teaching role they will thrive in.

Jolie, tell us about yourself

My name is Jolie and I’m a Recruitment Consultant at Spencer Clarke Group. I have worked here since 2023 and I absolutely love my job and my team.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me out with friends, going to the gym or on a nice long walk, reading books (Hunger Games or vampire books are my favourite), or listening to Taylor Swift!

How did you end up in the world of recruitment?

After gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), I wanted to step out of education and work in an office. I followed Spencer Clarke Group on social media that summer and loved the look of the culture.

I knew straight away that my experience teaching and passion for helping schools would be of great benefit for a career in education recruitment and I really wanted to be a part of their education team!

What does your role entail at Spencer Clarke Group?

I work with primary schools across East Lancashire and Lancaster - helping with their recruitment needs for Teachers, Teaching Assistants and SEN support staff.

I also help schools in other ways, by volunteering my time to work directly in their classes, helping out with SATs prep, school trips, careers days and summer fairs. I love being a part of my partnered school’s ethos and school culture.

From a candidate's side, I love getting to know the individuals I work alongside to make sure I place them into a school where they will thrive.

Who do you work with?

I work a lot with primary schools in Blackburn, Burnley, and Lancaster and surrounding areas. I love to get out and visit the schools I work with as much as possible to cement our working relationship and get to know their ethos on a personal level.

Can you give us an insight into how your market works?

My market is dependent on my schools. I work closely with them, listen to what they need and match appropriate staff to the role. All roles are different and can vary depending on the needs of the children, the working hours, the culture of the school and other factors, so it's really important for me to know my schools and candidates well.

I am very good at finding roles for my candidates that they are happy in and they usually stay in the roles for a very long time!

What is the best thing about being a recruiter within education, specifically working with primary schools?

I love being able to use my past knowledge and experience to help my schools. I understand how schools work and how to support them in a way that works best for them. It’s a great feeling when I find the perfect role for my candidates.

I also love being so involved with my schools. I really enjoy going in and helping out with so many events and meeting all the staff!

What are the current challenges facing primary schools and the education sector?

Recruitment is something a lot of schools express difficulty with, for many different reasons.

Specifically, a lot of them state challenges with finding qualified staff which is where we come in to help.

How does Spencer Clarke Group help overcome these challenges?

At Spencer Clarke Group we’re able to help with recruitment challenges and recruit on behalf of schools. It's one less thing for busy schools to do and I always have skilled, experienced, local staff who can step in when they need cover, whether it be on a temporary or permanent basis.

What advice would you give to an education professional looking for their first position in a primary school?

I definitely think knowing the primary curriculum is very important to schools, therefore I would advise professionals to try to gain hands-on experience with primary schools.

There is a high demand for SEN support in schools too, so experience with SEN children is highly desirable and can stand someone in good stead for embarking on a really rewarding career.

What does the future hold for you at Spencer Clarke Group?

I plan to be at Spencer Clarke Group for as long as I can imagine and I have already made so much progress during my time here.

I can’t wait to continue working with my team, working with even more schools and assisting more candidates in their job search for a special career in education.
