Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistant
Role Purpose
The Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistant provides support to pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping them to access learning, develop independence, and achieve their individual goals. Working under the direction of the class teacher and SENCO, the post holder will support pupils academically, socially, emotionally, and physically within the classroom and around the school.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils with a range of additional needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, learning disabilities, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
- Assist the class teacher in delivering engaging learning activities tailored to individual pupils' needs.
- Provide one-to-one and small group support as directed.
- Encourage positive behaviour and help pupils develop social and emotional skills.
- Promote pupils' independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
- Assist with classroom organisation, preparation of learning materials, and maintaining a safe learning environment.
- Observe and record pupils' progress, behaviour, and wellbeing, reporting concerns to the appropriate staff.
- Support pupils during breaktimes, lunchtimes, educational visits, and school activities where required.
- Follow Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), behaviour support plans, and guidance provided by teaching staff.
- Assist with personal care where required, following appropriate training and safeguarding procedures.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, staff, parents, and external professionals.
- Attend relevant training sessions and staff meetings.
- Adhere to safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality, and school policies at all times.
Desirable
- Previous experience working with children in schools, childcare, youth work, or care settings.
- Experience supporting pupils with SEN.
- Knowledge of autism, ADHD, SEMH, or other additional needs.
- First Aid or Team Teach/Positive Behaviour Support training (desirable but not essential).
Qualifications
No formal teaching assistant qualification is required for this role. Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in working with children with Special Educational Needs. Relevant experience in education, childcare, health, social care, or voluntary settings is advantageous. Successful applicants will receive training and ongoing professional development.
