SEMH Support Assistant - Preston

Spencer Clarke Group are working with a number of schools across Preston who are looking for SEMH Support Assistants to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.
This role is ideal for someone who is patient, resilient and able to build strong relationships with children and young people who may find school challenging. You do not necessarily need formal school-based experience, but experience in care, support work, youth work, sports coaching, residential settings or behaviour support would be highly beneficial.

The role


As an SEMH Support Assistant, you may be supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis, in small groups or within the wider classroom. You will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to help pupils feel safe, supported and able to engage with learning.
You may be supporting with:

  • Emotional regulation and positive behaviour
  • Classroom engagement and learning activities
  • Building confidence, trust and routine
  • Supporting pupils during transitions and unstructured times
  • De-escalating challenging situations calmly
  • Encouraging positive choices and independence
  • Helping pupils access learning in a supportive way

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Willing to follow guidance from school staff
  • Passionate about helping pupils feel understood and included

Relevant experience may include:

  • SEMH or behaviour support
  • Care or support work
  • Youth work
  • Residential childcare
  • Sports coaching or mentoring
  • PRU, alternative provision or school-based support
  • Personal experience supporting children or young people with additional needs

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 14.3% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
