Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving environment where they are free from harm and neglect. However, not all children get that opportunity and between April 2024 and March 2025, the NSPCC handled 17,734 child neglect cases. Statistics like this highlight the abundant need for child protection.
In this blog we explore what child protection is, why it matters, who is responsible and how child protection differs from child safeguarding.
What is child protection?
Child protection is the set of laws, policies and measures that come into play once a child is identified as being at risk, or is already experiencing serious harm, abuse or neglect.
Under child protection, measures may include removing a child from a harmful environment, providing counseling, or reporting incidents to the police or social services for investigation.
Unlike safeguarding, which focuses on prevention, child protection focuses on stopping further harm to a child and ensuring their immediate safety.
Effective child protection often requires cooperation between various agencies such as social services, schools, healthcare providers and law enforcement. The overall goal for all parties involved is to support a child's long-term recovery.
Why is child protection important?
Child protection is important because it ensures that when a child is already facing harm, abuse or neglect there are immediate and effective measures in place for intervention and safety.
Without child protection, many vulnerable children could remain stuck in harmful situations with no means of escape. Additionally, child protection not only removes children from harmful situations but also provides them with social, legal and emotional support.
Child protection also upholds children’s basic rights, helps them recover and helps break cycles of abuse, so that future generations can grow up in safer environments.
Who is responsible for child protection?
Child protection is a collective responsibility of schools, social services, healthcare providers, the police and other relevant professionals who respond when a child faces harm, abuse or neglect.
Schools play an important role in identifying the signs that a child may be in danger or is already facing harm and they must report these concerns promptly. Social services take the lead in assessing the situation, intervening when necessary and providing support to the affected child.
Healthcare providers, such as Nurses and Doctors, examine any injuries or health issues that could indicate abuse and provide the necessary care.
Law enforcement, such as the police, are also involved when a criminal investigation is required.
What's the difference between child safeguarding and child protection?
The main difference between child protection and child safeguarding is their timing and focus. Child safeguarding focuses on reducing the risk to children facing harm and aims to prevent it by creating a safe environment. Child safeguarding also educates children about potential risks and implements effective measures to stop harm before it occurs.
Child protection comes into play once a child has already been harmed or when they are at risk of abuse or neglect. Child protection focuses on removing children from harmful situations, ensuring they are safe and providing adequate support.
While both are equally as important, child protection is the critical safety net when safeguarding efforts fall short or when danger cannot be avoided.
