Overview of the role
To manage and deliver the effective maintenance of the highway network-ensuring it remains safe, accessible, and fit for use-through the planning, inspection, coordination, and execution of reactive, preventative, and cyclical maintenance works, while working closely with local communities to address their needs and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Inspect and maintain the highway network (including footways, cycle routes, and carriageways) through routine inspections and reactive, preventative, and cyclical maintenance activities to meet statutory safety standards.
- Respond to highway incidents such as flooding, collisions, and surface damage, acting as the Council's front-line representative and coordinating timely, safe resolutions-including out-of-hours emergencies.
- Plan, coordinate, and order maintenance works in partnership with contractors, ensuring cost-effective delivery, proper scoping, and minimal disruption to the public.
- Engage with local communities and stakeholders, including Parish and Town Councils, to identify priorities, share updates, and ensure the highway service aligns with local expectations and aspirations.
- Promote cross-team working and sustainability, supporting the Council's "one team" approach and contributing to environmental goals, including the commitment to becoming a Net Zero organisation by 2030.
