English Teacher (SEMH Specialist)

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced English Teacher to join a specialist SEMH provision. You'll play a key role in delivering engaging and accessible lessons tailored to meet the social, emotional and mental health needs of the students. This is a full-time, paid-to-scale role, with a strong likelihood of extension for the full academic year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high‑quality English lessons (KS3-KS4 and Functional Skills/GCSE as applicable) tailored for SEMH learners.

  • Create a structured, positive classroom environment using effective behaviour-management strategies.

  • Develop and review individual learning and behaviour plans in collaboration with SENCOs and support staff.

  • Monitor student progress, deliver constructive feedback, and adapt teaching to meet individual needs.

  • Build strong relationships with students, staff, parents and external professionals to support holistic development.

  • Participate in safeguarding practices, staff meetings, CPD activities, and contribute to the school ethos.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.

  • Experience teaching in an SEMH, SEND, or alternative provision setting.

  • Strong understanding of the English curriculum and strategies for differentiation and behaviour support.

  • Enhanced DBS and legal right to work in the UK.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience delivering GCSE or Functional Skills English.

  • Training in trauma-informed practice and positive behaviour interventions.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trust with SEMH learners.

  • Patience, resilience, empathy, and flexibility in responding to varied needs.
