SEMH Teaching Assistant - Secondary (Ages 11-16)

£106 per day - paid weekly

We are seeking a highly skilled, resilient, and confident SEMH Teaching Assistant to support secondary-aged pupils (11-16) in a specialist or alternative provision setting in the Dudley area. This is a long-term role starting in January, ideal for professionals experienced in managing challenging and antisocial behaviour and supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This role is suited to someone who can work independently with individual pupils while also collaborating effectively with teaching staff and wider support teams.

The Role:

  • Providing 1:1 and classroom-based support to students with SEMH needs

  • Managing and responding to challenging, antisocial, and high-risk behaviours using consistent, trauma-informed approaches

  • Supporting pupils' emotional regulation, engagement, and re-integration into learning

  • Implementing behaviour support strategies and maintaining clear boundaries

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals

  • Maintaining accurate records and contributing to support plans and reviews

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Extensive experience supporting young people with SEMH needs

  • Background in support work, youth work, care work, alternative provision, or SEN education

  • Strong confidence in behaviour management, de-escalation, and positive handling strategies

  • Ability to work independently while also being an effective team member

  • A calm, authoritative, and resilient approach in challenging situations

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries
