Level 3 SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Longsight, Manchester
Start Date: 3rd November 2025
Contract: Full-time, Term-time only

Are you passionate about supporting children who need a different kind of learning environment to help them succeed?
We are seeking a Level 3 SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our dedicated team at a Primary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Longsight, Manchester.

Our PRU provides education for primary-aged pupils (5-11 years old) who have experienced challenges in mainstream settings and may have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or other additional barriers to learning. We pride ourselves on offering a nurturing, therapeutic, and highly individualised approach that helps pupils re-engage with learning and develop positive self-esteem.

About the Role

As a Level 3 SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in helping pupils achieve both academically and emotionally. You will:

  • Support small groups and individual pupils, implementing tailored learning and behaviour plans under the direction of the class teacher.

  • Deliver therapy-based and social skills programmes to promote emotional regulation and positive behaviour.

  • Provide pastoral support - helping pupils to feel safe, valued, and understood within the school environment.

  • Assist in developing and implementing Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs).

  • Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour, celebrating successes along the way.

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent role model and mentor.

  • Liaise with teachers, parents, and external professionals (such as therapists and social workers) to ensure joined-up support.

  • When required, provide short-term class cover, delivering pre-prepared lessons and maintaining a positive classroom environment.

About You

You will be a calm, patient, and resilient individual who thrives on helping children overcome barriers to learning.
You should have:

  • A Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).

  • Experience of working with SEMH or behaviourally challenged pupils, ideally within a primary or specialist setting.

  • A nurturing, trauma-informed approach to supporting children.

  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills.

  • The ability to work collaboratively within a skilled, multidisciplinary team.

About Our School

Our PRU is a small, inclusive and caring setting where every child is seen as an individual. We provide:

  • A safe and structured environment with high levels of support and understanding.

  • Therapeutic interventions to help pupils manage emotions, build confidence and develop life skills.

  • A curriculum focused on academic, social, and emotional growth.

  • A team of committed professionals who believe that every child deserves the chance to succeed.

We Offer

  • A strong, supportive team and leadership who prioritise staff wellbeing.

  • Opportunities for ongoing professional development and training in SEMH and trauma-informed practice.

  • The chance to make a real difference to the lives of young learners every single day.
