Capital Accountant - Interim
Spencer Clarke Group are working closely with an East Midlands Local Authority to appoint an Interim Capital Accountant to support the close down of the 2025/26 accounts.
This is a technical interim assignment focused purely on capital accounting and year-end delivery. The successful candidate will take sole responsibility for the capital element of the Statement of Accounts.

The Role
The successful candidate will lead the capital accounting workstream for the 2025/26 year-end close.
Key responsibilities:
- Leading the technical capital year-end close process.
- Operating and maintaining the Fixed Asset Register.
- Ensuring assets are appropriately revalued and reviewed for impairment.
- Monitoring capital expenditure and financing in line with statutory and accounting requirements.
- Preparing and reviewing capital journals and supporting working papers.
- Drafting capital notes to the Statement of Accounts.
- Supporting production of the Capital Programme Budget and Capital Strategy.
- Compiling and submitting relevant capital-related government returns.
- Ensuring compliance with the CIPFA Code of Practice.
There are no financial systems administration responsibilities within this role.
About You
You will ideally have:
- Strong Local Authority capital accounting experience.
- Proven track record delivering capital year-end close.
- Experience managing Fixed Asset Registers, revaluations and impairments.
- Strong technical knowledge of local government accounting standards.
- Ability to work autonomously and take full ownership of the capital element.
