Job description

Spencer Clarke Group are working alongside a local authority in Haringey to appoint a talented Clerk of Works on a contract basis.

As a Clerk of Works, you’ll play a vital role in assisting the Construction related Technical Advisory Team Lead to promote and manage Technical Excellence, including the provision of construction related technical quality assurance and construction quality control and also undertake the Clerk of Works role and be a key member of the Technical Advisory team in the provision of a professional, quality, efficient and reliable service

Accountabilities:

  • Review contract documentation including drawings, specifications and contract conditions.
  • Advise upon the practical implications of implementing the designs and draw attention to any areas for improvement.
  • Inspect construction works for compliance with contract documentation, contract instructions and good practice.
  • Inspect construction works for compliance with statutory regulations e.g. Building Regulations, CDM Regulations, Health and Safety at Work Act and Control of Asbestos Regulations.
  • Keep appropriate records of conditions and progress on site.
  • Ensure that such records are comprehensive and well-structured to assist with the administration of the contract.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to address any areas of dissatisfaction for example by recording concerns about site cleanliness and advising the contractor of any remedial measures required.
  • Carry out inspections to record any defects which become apparent after the completion of works and pass those records to the appropriate person as identified within the contract.
  • Attend site meetings and maintain accurate records in order to prepare progress reports on site activities
  • Develop and maintain good co-operative working relationships with a range of construction related consultants and contractors employed by the council.
  • Ensure external agents and contractors that undertake work adhere to the Council's customer care standards.
  • Keep updated on current legislation related to the Council's statutory obligations and work with colleagues to ensure that processes and procedures are in place to facilitate the delivery of these.
  • Maintain knowledge of the current team objectives and understanding of own contribution.
  • To identify and suggest improvements to current ways of working in order to deliver a more efficient and effective service for clients.
  • Maintain regular contact with clients, contractors which may include but is not limited to: Members of the public, residents, community groups, residents associations and other bodies representing local residents, Consultants, Contractors, Statutory Bodies, Head Teachers, School Governors, Government Agencies, other Local Authorities, operational contractor, developers and supplier Representatives

Candidate requirements:

  • Construction/Surveying/ property related qualification or minimum 5 years relevant experience in construction industry and 3 years as a Clerk of Works.
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Relevant professional qualification in a discipline covering building and construction e,g MICWCI
  • Have proven experience of working in the construction industry of which a minimum of at least the last 5 years to be as a Clerks of Works.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Able to fully access buildings/building sites/ rough ground in order to carry out aspects of the role.
  • Ability to work flexibly and occasionally attend Council and Public meetings outside usual working hours as required including evening meetings.
  • A disciplined approach to time and workload management.
  • Ability to work at various sites across the Borough as required.
  • Hold a valid UK Driver's License.
  • Significant experience of construction or building related quality control experience.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with construction related contractors and trades to deliver a service to budget and within the quality expected by the customer and the organisation.
  • Significant experience of identifying, engaging with and managingdiverse range of contractors and stakeholders.
  • Experience of undertaking inspections of properties in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Experience with closing out of defects
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulatory, statutory and legislative requirements in relation to property maintenance.
  • Clear understanding of specifications, schedules of rates, design drawings, planning and building regulation applications.
  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports.
  • Sound knowledge of planning and building control requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently either independently or as a member of a team.
